  • 63cm. high.
20.5-cm velvet covered dial, engraved chapter ring with Roman numerals and outer minute marking, foliate pierced gilt hands, cast brass Chronos mount with signature below Claude Raillard A Paris, similarly signed verge movement with baluster pillars and outer numbered countwheel striking on a bell, silk suspended pendulum with cycloid cheeks, ebony and turtleshell veneered case with inlaid brass banding, surmounted by a reclining putto and four flambeau finials, moulded arched cornice surmounted by a mask and trailing garlands, protruding corners with double pilasters, glazed front door and sides, moulded plinth raised on twisted tapered feet

Condition

numerals of chapter ring not well done (with black lacquer), signature plate a little small but engraving well done, back of dial with old silk, one clip holding the movement lacking, old hole for pendulum start still there, movement in good condition and able to function, arrangement for pendulum up and down of later date but well made, case in good condition, fully restored and therefore difficult to establish the age of various parts, top with putto probably of later date but done a long time ago, bottom with three plugged holes, possibly for fixing on an additional plinth or bracket, together with a pendulum, three winders and a doorkey

Catalogue Note

Claude Raillard is recorded working in Paris from 1662 until 1700. He was Juré between 1662 and 1675. He died in 1708. Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, pp. 543.
