The first Nautilus timepiece to start the collection appeared in 1976 and was created by the watch designer Gérald Genta. The design of the sporty Nautilus was inspired by the sea vessel and its porthole in particular. Timepieces at the time of its introduction were traditionally produced in gold, the Nautilus, by contrast, was manufactured in steel and was unconventionally oversized in its uniquely shaped case. The Nautilus embodies a powerful and casually elegant timekeeping design and is an icon of Patek Philippe's Collection. The daring ergonomic shape is yet again transformed with the addition of the chronograph function - a first in the history of the Nautilus. Production of this reference began in 2006 and is still in production today.
