Catalogue Note
Alan Martin Gard was born in City Road Hospital, Finsborough in 1935.
He trained as a jeweller at Crombie's on the corner of Maddox Street and Bond Street. Alan was both a contemporary and friend to Andrew Grima working together for four years in the early 60's.
Alan then started up his own jewellery making business in 1964. He built up the workshop to twenty-five people, his designs used texture and gemstones, taking inspiration from nature and organic contemporary design.
Gard was at his height of popularity in the 1970s making thousands of pieces, both commissions and collections, selling them to both national and international clients. Several pieces were sold through Hooper Bolton. Still based in London, he now is located at 14 St Cross Street, London, EC1N 8UN, he trades under the name Alan Gard Ltd. signing his pieces AMG.
