A Dutch polychrome painted cupboard 'Assendelfter kast' first half 18th century

decorated overall with flower tendrils, birds and grapes, the four doors with biblical scenes from the Old Testament, the sides painted with the Four Evangelists

In overall good restored condition. Corner left side replaced and part corner right side top replaced. Handles later. left and right side with crack due to construction. Lower section panels with shrinkage crack. Part of the polychromy refreshed. Plinth later. Wear to the painted surface.

The Assendelfter or Zaanse cupboard is a polychrome-painted four-door cupboard, which is characterized by its open compartment between the upper and lower doors. This open space, which was used for storage of domestic earthenware, is adjoined to the upper side by a dentiled arch. The doors depict biblical scenes after Jan Luyken.
