Catalogue Note
In the 18th and 19th century a horse-sleigh was a necessary means of conveyance in wintertime. Due to the much colder weather it was the easiest and fastest way to travel the icy roads. Most well-to-do countrymen owned a gig as well as a horse-sleigh. As both objects being a status symbol, much effort was put in the execution of these pieces, such as gilding, silk upholstery, carefully painted decorations and rich carving.
In wintertime the horse-sleigh, besides being used to show off one's wealth, was used for trotting-matches on ice and processions. People even tried to cross the Zuyder Zee or to reach the Frisian Islands when the sea was frozen.
