An English ebony brass mounted quarter chiming table clock, Thomas Grace circa 1740

16-cm engraved silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, arched brass dial with mask spandrels and signature plaque signed Tho Grace London, apertures for date and mock pendulum, subsidiary for strike/silent in the arch, fusee verge movement with foliate engraved backplate, rack hour striking on a bell, pull wind quarter repeating converted to quarter chiming on six bells, ebony bell top case surmounted by a handle and four finials, brass lined glazed front door with pierced frets, glass panels at the back and sides lined with rosewood veneer, moulded plinth on brass bracket feet

dial dirty and tarnished, minute hand probably replaced, extra strike/silent and winding hole made for the added spring barrel for the quarter chiming, movement in working order but very dirty and in need of an overhaul, clock had originally pull-wind quarter repeat which was supplemented with a springbarrel and unlocking so that now the clock has quarter chiming, this was probably done late 19th century, case in original dirty condition, mask with extra hole for the winding of the quarter chiming train, fixing strips added to hold the movement, case lacking a few small pieces of the rosewood veneer rims around the glass panels, brass parts with some rubbing, ebony a little pale and with some cracks, escutchion lacking, together with two winders and two doorkeys
