A fine mahogany and gilt-bronze side cabinet supplied by C. Mellier and Co. circa 1890

the upper part with a pierced gallery above a pair of panelled doors with beaded mouldings enclosing pigeon holes and flanked by corbels applied with cast acanthus foliage, the lower part with three frieze drawers and a further pair of panelled doors flanked by small drawers, on a plinth base, the locks stamped CHUBB'S PATENT, 120 QUEEN VICTORIA S^T and 1295729, stamped C.MELLIER C^o

In good overall condition, but with minor surface marks and scratches, the plinth base with more marked scuffing, the sides with old splits and wear and scratches to the gilt. Mellier & Co of 60 Margaret Street, London, took over the celebrated Paris based firm of Monbro, who had premises in London between 1861 and 1870.  The stamp of the Mellier firm is reproduced in Christopher Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, 1981, p. 317.
