A Portuguese carved and turned rosewood bed circa 1800

incorporating a 17th century Indian footboard, with spiral turned spindles and finials and pierced carved decoration depicting birds in scrolling foliage and centred by putti

Sold Christie`s March 4 2004 on behalf of the 7th Earl of Macclesfield's executors

Colour less orange more natural and attractive than in the catalogue illustration. Some minor sections of carving replaced e.g to wing of bird on left side of the footboard and part of the wing of the bird on the right which are darker in colour than the rest. Some old restorations generally and patches to the veneer which have been well executed and are not too noticeable. Attractive detail to carving. In overall good condition.

The bed appears to have been made in Portugal at the turn of the 19th century in the then popular "Antiquarian" style.  The footboard is probably 17th century and from the Coromandel coast.
