- 94cm. high, 201cm. wide, 79cm. deep; 3ft. 1in., 6ft. 7in., 2ft. 7in.
after George Hepplewhite, the rectangular padded back with shaped sides, the cushion seat with three loose cushions, on brass castors
Condition
Please note the illustration has been reversed for the catalogue.
A very good solid sofa. Some old marks and scratches to the legs. The upholstery is worn, faded in places and has some threadbare sections. The front centre right hand leg has small inset strips of wood let into each side indicating a repair. The back centre left hand leg has been cracked and repaired. All the legs have later strengthening brackets attached to the inside which are not visible unless the sofa is turned onto its side.

For similar with the same high sides and square legs, see George Hepplewhite, The Cabinet-Maker & Upholsterer's Guide, 1794, 3rd edition, pl. 21. Whilst the offered lot is not by Hepplewhite, it illustrates well the influence his published designs had regionally and that this commission, which is of good quality, would have been considered a fashionable choice for the drawing room at Newton Surmaville - a choice inspired by one of the great London makers.
