A rare English oak panelled chest late 16th/early 17th century

the hinged cover with later inlaid four pointed star and carved initials 'V W', the stile supports with pierced angle brackets

Tidy and of rare design. Darkish colour and a lot of patina commensurate with age. The cover with old indents and the front rail of the cover with partial old splitting near each corner. Indications of a former hasp at front centre of cover. Partial old split at the top of the rear right stile. The interior floor replaced and with some later surrounding batons. The interior panels and stiles with some typical old fragmentings. The interior of the front has some stamped letters and numerals to the panel framing. The iron loop hinges to the cover are probably partially replaced. There is wear on the interior of the cover where there has been previous movement from a former unattached hinge. Old wear on front escutcheon. The existing lock is a replacement. Key lacking. An impressive chest of strong appearance.
