An Irish giltwood console table, 2nd half 19th century

the moulded grey and white marble top on a twisting vine-form base hanging with bunches of grapes and leaves, the lower plinth veneered with rosewood

Minor chips to giltwood throuhout but in particular with losses to the gilding on the front left hand stem which will need attention. Some minor cracks and losses to foliage. The present table relates to rather whimsical designs for pier tables by Thomas Johnson, illustrated in his Collection of Designs, 1758, pl.24, see illustration. Almost certainly conceived as a pier table, the present table would have had a mirror above in a matching style.  It exhibits all the liveliness and novelty that is associated with Johnson, who is celebrated for his remarkable imagination and eccentricity.
