A Regency rosewood and mahogany gilt-brass mounted breakfront wardrobe circa 1815

with applied gilt-metal mounts, in the manner of John Mclean,  stamped WILKINSON, LUDGATE HILL 15 10070, with an arched pediment above a central pair of cupboard doors enclosing sliding trays with two short and two long drawers below, flanked by a cupboard on each side with hanging space, on ball feet and a shaped plinth

This piece is generally in good condition. There have been some minor repairs and patching to veneers, old marks and scratches consistent with age and use, particularly on the doors top left hand side of right hand door and bottom of left hand central door. and drawers. The plinth has some veneer losses. It could benefit from a light repolishing. The cornice is chipped top left hand side centre. The left hand side has some age cracks. There is a section of moulding missing on the left hand side approx 8in. long. All doors slightly warped. There are losses to mouldings on the right hand side particularly in the middle. Overall a handsome piece which will restore well. It can be broken down into sections. This wardrobe carries the label of William Wilkinson, the noted London furniture maker.  Wilkinson began his career around 1790, working in partnership with a relation, Thomas Wilkinson, but by 1808 had established a business of his own at No 14 Ludgate Hill.  From this prime location, in the heart of the City, Wikinson built up a flourishing trade, winnin significant commissions from such distinguished clients as the Goldsmiths' Company.
