Catalogue Note
It is extremely rare to find Northern Song period persimmon-glazed vessels of this very large size and well-preserved condition. A smaller bowl of related globular form and russett glaze is illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1991, pl. 29. See also another much smaller bowl of related shape and glaze sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th October 1991, lot 10.
Wares of this type were inspired by russet-glazed 'Ding' wares of the Northern Song period. For example, see a persimmon-colored 'Ding' bowl of conical form included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Tokyo National Museum. Chinese Ceramics, vol.1, Tokyo, 1988, cat.no. 368.
