Catalogue Note

The form of the present work is closely related to Mughal jade carvings of the 17th and 18th centuries. For a Mughal green jade example of this form with a cover, in the collection of the British Museum, see Roger Keverne et al, Jade, London, 1995, fig. 17. p. 283. Other Mughal examples of white jade may be found in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Jadeware. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, vol. III, no. 237, p. 285; and the National Museum of History, Taipei, illustrated in Jade: Ch'ing Dynasty Treasures from the National Museum of History, Taiwan, Taipei, 1997, no. 212. A Mughal jar of similar form was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1st November 2004, lot 1064.

For a Chinese jade of this form with full-height petals up the sides and bearing an inscription dated in accordance with 1770, see S. Howard Hansford, Chinese Carved Jades, London, 1968, pl. 91.  Another example, its body densely carved with blossoms and foliage, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 20th March 1990, lot 903. A closely related example with petal borders, high petal foot, and carved with a long inscription bearing a date corresponding to spring of 1783, was sold at Christie's London, 12th November 2002, lot 54.
