A 'BLANC-DE-CHINE' FIGURE OF GUANYIN RECLINING ON A LION BY SU XUEJIN (1869 - 1919)

the female deity reclining languidly upon a recumbent lion adorned with a collar of bells and looking up adoringly at her, her right arm bent upon the lion's hairy back and folded up to support her head with elaborate chignon set with large roses and flower-stalks, her shoulders wrapped in a shawl knotted at her chest and suspended with long tassels, her left hand resting upon her drawn-up left leg, all on a pierced rockwork base, her back moulded with the sealmark boji yuren, wood stand

Apart from minor original firing flaws such as a couple minor firing cracks, an iron spot and burst air bubble to the front of her robe, the figure is in excellent condition overall.

Boji yuren was one of the marks used by Su Xuejin (1869 - 1919).  Compare a sequence of figures by Su with similar seal marks, recently exhibited at the China Institute, Blanc de Chine. Divine Images in Porcelain, New York, 2002, nos 68-71, and in particular no. 70, a standing figure of Magu with deer, with almost identical treatment of the rockwork base and the roses in the headdress.
