Condition
slight wear to metal thread soumakhing, original side cords, ends turned and taped on reverse, soumakh areas with some weft showing and some wear to metal threads revealing yellow support thread, pile overall in good condition

Catalogue Note
The five character inscription Zhonghe Dian bei yong suggests that the carpet was made for the 'Hall of Central Harmony' in the Forbidden City, Beijing. This was the second great throne hall of the outer courts, where the emperor would have prepared for annual rites, such as sowing the fields at the Altar of Agriculture (Xian Nong Tan) in spring, by examining the appropriate manuals here.
