Description

  • A Chinese silk and metal thread carpet
  • approximately 307 by 252cm., 10ft. 1 in. by 8ft. 4in.
the metal soumakh field with silk pile and inscription reading '(This is) prepared for the palace Jing Ren'

Condition

original flatwoven end finishes and sidecords, foundation in white cotton, applied gold and yellow silk fringes to each end, probably contemporaneous with carpet; good full pile overall, approximately 1/2cm. in depth: pile is a little rucked and might benefit from surface clean and brush out; metal thread brocading in good condition, though now tarnished as is typical with pieces of this age and type (copper thread with tarnished silvered metal plating), soumakh stitch quite 'open' so that scattered weft threads visible; overall the carpet is in very sound condition with no visible wear or repairs
