Description

modelled seated on a rockwork throne, her right leg crossed on which sits a young boy holding a brush and ingot, she wears a long flowing robe falling in deep U-shaped folds and open at the chest to reveal a beaded necklace, her face with gentle smile and framed by a high hooded cowl, the glaze of milk-white tone

A similar Guanyin was included in the exhibition The Wrestling Boys. An Exhibition of Chinese and Japanese Ceramics from the 16th to the 18th Century in the Collection at Burghley House, Burghley House, South Lincolnshire, 1983, cat. no. 237. Compare another figure in Eva Strober, La Maladie de Porcelain, Berlin, 2001, pl. 49, where the author mentions that the popularity of this type of figure was probably due to its similarity in appearance to images of the Christian Virgin Mary and child.
