Description

three painted with a pair of phoenix to the cover amongst ruyi and Daoist emblems and flame scrolls, above radiating panels of lotus, chrysanthemum and peony, the fourth painted with a pencilled dragon amongst clouds and a flaming pearl, one box with apocryphal Xuande mark

Provenance

Collection of Captain M. Hatcher.
Christie's Amsterdam, 14th February 1985, lots 25, 26, 27 & 60.

Condition

The four boxes and covers are in very good overall condition, with the exception of short firing lines to each box on the corners of the interior, minor frits and tiny chips to the edges, minor glaze firing imperfections including iron spots and slight glaze degradation due to sea water. The dragon box also has a short firing crack to the footring. It should be noted that the cobalt-blue is of a slightly stronger tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest.
