A LARGE CARVED CELADON 'PEONY' JAR MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY

Estimate
4,000 - 6,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

the robustly-potted body of ovoid form rising from a short spreading foot to a short tapering neck, freely carved around the exterior with a broad leafy peony scroll band above classic scroll and stiff leaf bands, covered overall with a rich sea-green glaze, save for the base with an unglazed ring burnt orange in the firing

Condition

The jar is in very good overall condition with the exception of a shallow 1cm., wide depression to the rim (consistent with manufacture), a 1.5 and 2.5cm., firing crack across the base of the footring, large areas of adhered kiln grit to the inside edge of the footring, and light glaze scratches. It should be noted that the glaze is of a slightly bluer-green tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest.
