A PAIR OF CARVED RED LACQUER BOXES AND COVERS QING DYANSTY, LATE 18TH CENTURY

Description

in mirror image, each of square form with canted corners, deeply carved to the top face with an archaistic panel enclosing a sage in a landscape, the straight sides centred by an oval panel enclosing a floral spray and all reserved on a dense lotus strapwork ground, the interior lacquered black

Condition

First box: Generally good condition but there is a small area of lacquer loss to the top of the tree on the left hand side - 7mm x 3mm. There are two areas of lacquer loss to the interior rim of the cover - 5mm x 2mm and 1mm x 2mm. There are several other chipped areas to the interior rim of the cover. There are also several chipped areas to the rim of the base. There are scratched areas to the underside of the base and some minor shallow chips to one side - 1.5cm x 3mm and 3mm x 2mm. There has also been repainting to the rim of the cover and the base. Second box: These lacquer boxes are generally in good condition, but there is a small loss of laquer to the right area of the bridge 4mm x 2mm. There is an 8cm x 4mm area of damage to the left edge of the cover. There are several chipped areas and loss of lacquer to the interior rim of the cover. There are several chipped areas to the interior rim of the base. The rims of the base and cover have been repainted. Slight loss of lacquer to the edge of one flower to the side panel of the base. It is worth noting that one box has been stained.
