Catalogue Note
The flambé glaze on this piece and the other two pieces in this sale, with its purple-red glaze with blue streaks, have a kinship with the jun type glaze of Henan used in the Song Dynasty. Reproductions of The Song jun glaze, began at the kilns in Jingdezhen during the Xuande era in the early fifteenth century and were revived on a large scale under the Yongzheng emperor and continue to be made today. Qing jun wares made at imperial kilns feature a hard body, a trimmed foot covered with a brownish slip and usually a stamped or incised reign mark. Pieces made at private kilns tend to have a coarse texture and be disproportioned, the untrimmed foot being over-painted with a dark slip.
