In 8s (8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.; 216 x 166 mm). Frontispiece and 173 text illustrations by W. E. Kemble, photogravure plate of a portrait bust of Clemens by Karl Gerhardt (BAL state 2, with the tablecloth not visible and Karl Gerhardt Sc. added to the shoulder of the bust), title-leaf is a cancel with copyright notice on verso dated 1884, BAL state 2; minor spotting and foxing to frontispiece, short fore-edge tear on p. 37. Publisher's green pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and black, peach-colored endleaves; minor rubbing to foot of spine and lower corners, minor spotting to black ground behind figure of Huck, minor foxing to front pastedown.

With BAL points: page [13], state 1 (erroneously listing the illustration Him and another Man on page 88 rather than page 87); page 57, state 1 (eleventh line reading with the was); page 282, state 3 (leaf is a cancel, the illustration re-engraved with a straight vertical line on Silas Phelps's trousers); page 155, state 3 (the last 5 larger than the first and dropping below the line of the figures preceding it).
