Catalogue Note
Jefferson acknowledges receiving "from Jonathan Shoemaker on account the following sums at their respective dates ... amounting in the whole to thirteen hundred and eighty six dolars for which I have credited him in our accounts."
Shoemaker was a miller who had earlier served as a manager of the Pennsylvania Hospital, as well as in the state's constitutional convention. He owned the Columbia Mills on Rock Creek in the District of Columbia, and in 1807 he leased the Shadwell Mills from Thomas Jefferson for an annual fee of $1,250. Shadwell was poorly managed by one of Shoemaker's sons, however, and in 1810 he gave up the lease.
