Description

In 4s.  Original cloth, acetate dust-jacket unlettered; a fine copy.

First edition containing the first published photographs of the "dark side" of the moon. These had been made five weeks earlier by the Soviet moon-probe Luna 3, which radioed her pictures back to Earth on 7 October 1959, fulfilling an age-old dream. It is said, for example, that Sir Jon Herschel, asked on his deathbed what would be his greatest consolation, replied that it would be to see the other side of the Moon.
