Catalogue Note

A splendid collection of original watercolors of orchids, assembled by Oakes Ames (1874–1950), director of the Harvard Botanical Garden and pioneer in the study and classification of the orchidaceae.

The collection includes 69 watercolors by Charles Storer, 3 by Ames himself, 14 by his wife Blanche, 2 by J. L. MacFarlane, 1 by Putzys, and 8 by unidentified artists.  All are beautifully executed and in good condition. Most are signed and dated by the artist.
