Contemporary Dutch vellum, blind-tooled in a panel design with arabesque medallion stamped in central panel, gold-stamped red leather label on spine; soiled, upper joint cracked.

First edition and a fine impression of the plates. A classic description of America, published at the zenith of the Dutch empire. The plates illustrate the customs, festivals, rites and occupations of native Americans, as well as spectacular naval battles and bombardments. The work is most famous for its early view of New Amsterdam (page 124), first published in 1651.
