Catalogue Note
Just three days after Prussia joins the Coalition, Napoleon writes from Paris to the Duc de Feltre, with instructions on where to deploy his many generals. He mentions Verdier, Semelé, van Damme, Moreau, Bertrand, Dumoulin, Tureau, Barbou, Vignolle, and many others. He sends them to Italy, but chiefly to Mainz, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. In the aftermath of the defeat in Russia in 1812, Napoleon was determined to reestablish his hegemony in Central Europe. He marched into Germany where he defeated the Coalition at the Battle of Lützen (2 May 1813) and at Bautzen (20–21 May 1813).
