Catalogue Note

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in ink on the front free endpaper: "To Gene Tunney from his friend and admirer Ernest Hemingway." This "admiration" is reflected in a canceled passage dealing with courage and cowardice in the holograph manuscript of Green Hills of Africa: "'A brave man had a certain pride. A coward said this pride was of no importance ... The cowards had the charm though. Not all of the charming ones were cowards. Look at [Gene] Tunney. There was a very brave man and he had great charm'" (Carlos Baker, Ernest Hemingway: a Life Story, 1980, p. 808).
