Catalogue Note

An unusual relic of the first Tunney-Dempsey fight. When Tunney retired from the ring, he stepped away from the fight game altogether. In 1965, he told his biographer, "They're always inviting me to major fights ... but I have no interest in going. ... I just don't see the point in me being introduced in the ring before a fight. After all, I haven't fought in more than thirty years. Why should anyone be interested in seeing me in a boxing ring now?" (Cavanaugh, Tunney, p. 394). However, to support a scholarship program, Tunney was willing to make a personal appearance, where he received his corner stool from the Philadelphia championship.
