Condition

An impressive piece with an interesting provenance. The panels are period and the framework is modern. The whole has been cleaned and repatinated. Typical minor marks and scratches consistent with the material. One or two elements slightly bent but the overall impact is striking. Of good overall condition and ready for display.

Catalogue Note

Six panels (two with slightly different figures) from this series provenanced to the Folies-Bergère were sold: Ader Tajan, Art Nouveau, Art Déco, Paris - Hôtel Drouot, 24 June 1992, lots 258-260.

Joan Kahr refers to these decorative grilles and how Brandt made them as a commission, either for permanent display or for a specific revue, for the Folies-Bergère in 1926, op.cit. p.141.  The decoration was based on the iconic Danseur firescreen designed by Brandt for the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925.

We are grateful to Joan Kahr for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
