Catalogue Note
Axel Salto's work spanned a period that saw some of the most radical changes in the history of design. Having trained as a fine artist, he designed jewellery, textiles and book bindings. His best known work however is in the field of ceramics. Between the 1920s and the 1950s, he designed striking pieces from the enamelled biscuit porcelain designs for Bing and Grondahl, shown at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Paris, 1925 to the boldly glazed forms more usually associated with him today. These draw strongly on the influences of antique Chinese ceramics, particularly in terms of the glazes. The forms however are more usually drawn from nature with exaggerated gourd and urchin forms of sculptural beauty.
