ASK THE EXPERT.
Pierre-André Montauban was born in Paris on 22 September 1763. He is not recorded as working there until 1800, when he entered his mark as 'bijoutier, garnisseur' from 30, quai des Orfèvres, where he was still recorded working in 1822. He specialised in mounting miniatures and earlier panels in gold or, more usually, tortoiseshell boxes.
For other gold-mounted tortoiseshell boxes by this maker, see Sotheby's London, 24 November 2004, lot 5, its lid set with antique gold coins; Sotheby's London, 12 November 1998, lot 51, the lid containing a micromosaic plaque; and Sotheby's London, 11 July 1996, lot 118, set with a portrait miniature.
