Condition

Overall excellent condition and crisp. The lid lining is slightly crinkled near hinge, and there are surface scratches to the interior of the base. The rose diamond frame on the lid has possibly been added later. "Ask the Expert" The miniatures are very well-painted. It is easy to understand why Vachette chose to re-use them from an earlier box, which probably had been damaged and the miniatures saved. It is rare to find neo-gothic ornament on a box of this date, which attests to Vachette's inventiveness as a maker. The detail image illustrated on page 68, upper left, is after Greuze's "The Wool Winder" of circa 1759, which is in the Frick Collection, New York.
