Catalogue Note
Such caskets have been described as Venetian, Paduan and Sienese but are now generally thought to be from a Ferrara workshop. The decoration in lead rice paste was produced in a mould and then applied by glue to the casket. Although the production appears to have been plentiful and to have spanned a half a century, by the very nature of the material in which they were made, the majority have not survived.
