Catalogue Note

Pietro Belverte, born in Bergamo in Lombardy was one of a group of Lombard sculptors who moved and sent up workshops in Naples in the early sixteenth century bringing with them the Northern tradition of wood carving combined with gilt and polychrome decoration.  Compare the treatment to the drapery and physiognomy with work attributed to Pietro Belverte and his workshop, in particular the figures the Virgin and St. Joseph in the chiesa del Carmine in Pozzuoli, illustrated by Maietta.
