Description

  • a pair of painted wood kneeling acolytes
the kneeling figures with hands clasped in prayer, polychromy refreshed

Condition

The overall condition of the figures is good with some wear consistent with age. The polychromy and gilding is partly refreshed with some minor losses. The hands have been carved separately (and probably have been replaced). The figures have been carved in sections, visible in some places as for example at the top of their heads. There are some cracks to the wood. There is minor dirt to the surface, particularly around the bases.

Catalogue Note

These kneeling figures probably formed adoring pendants either side of an altar. The sweet dignity and grace of the figures recalls the earlier Sienese master Francesco di Valdambrino (1363-1435) and the figures may originate from the area around Siena.
