Condition
The panel has been mounted on another panel, and is in very good condition, flat and even. There are some very minor scattered flecks of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the sky. Apart from a few scratches to the surface, notably to the corners and centre left of the composition, this work is in good condition, with fresh, bright colours, a clean surface and fine detail. Held in a decorative, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

The present work depicts a saïs, a servant, usually a young boy, whose job it was to make way for his master's carriage by running ahead to clear the street of pedestrians and obstacles.
