Catalogue Note

From 1904 to 1911 Iturrino travelled continuously throughout Spain, spending time in Salamanca, Bilbao, Madrid, Seville and Málaga, with short visits back to Paris. Well received in the French capital, in 1901 he exhibited together with Picasso at Ambroise Vollard's. Also in Paris he met Matisse; in 1909 he painted with him in Seville and the Fauvist influence latent in his previous works now came to the fore. His relationship with Matisse was an important and lasting one: in 1913 they travelled to Tangiers together where Iturrino remained until the following year; at the end of his life Iturrino moved to the south of France to be close to Matisse at Cagnes-Sur-Mer.
