Catalogue Note
After World War II, Zóbel left his native Manila for the United States to attend Harvard University, where he worked with the Boston School of figurative painting. After returning to the Philippines, Zóbel came back to the East Coast of the United States in 1954, visiting Providence, Rhode Island, where he encountered Mark Rothko's work. Marking a turning point in his career, thereafter he settled in Spain, his subsequent work expressing a potent meditative quality and his increasing fascination with light.
