Catalogue Note
Known for his wide range of French subjects, Goeneutte completed the present work during a trip to the Normandy coast in 1881.
Goeneutte frequented the studios of Renoir and Manet, modelling for several of Renoir's works, including La Balançoir and Le Moulin de la galette. He had moved to Montmartre in 1875 after the death of his teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Isidore Pils. Though he was associated with Manet, Degas and Renoir and the immediacy of their work would inform his, he never exhibited with the Impresssionist group, preferring the official Salons.
