This condition report has been provided by Jane McAusland FIIC, Conservator and Restorer of Art on Paper, Nether Hall Barn, Old Newton, Nr Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14. Support The artist has used a sheet of laid paper to support this drawing. At present the paper is attached at its edges to a thick board, which is probably contemporary with the work. The top edge is unevenly cut and there is some loss to the lower left corner. The sheet is 'time stained' and some foxing is evident, particularly upper left and lower right. There are a few whiter areas of paper towards the foot. Medium The charcoal is in a good condition. The illustration shows the work to be more yellow than the original. Conservation Note For its longevity this drawing should be lifted from the board and cleaned to remove the acquired acidity causing the staining. Note: This work was viewed outside studio conditions. On the genesis of this drawing, Lhermitte notes in his handbook: 'Before the Virgin of the rue Haute, they have built an altar. On the steps, the priest gives the benediction, surrounded by clergy. Four men carry a dais, young women in white carry the banner and people follow behind. Some are on their knees. Sunny.'
