Condition

The canvas has been relined. There are scattered patches of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the sky, two areas of possible repair to the lower centre and the lower right, and scattered in the darker areas along the lower edge. Apart from the faint impression of the upper stretcher and fine craquelure, this work is in good condition. Held in a decorative, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame with a name plate.

Catalogue Note

The Austrian ensigns on the boats, the local costumes, and onion-domed churches suggest that this could be a port in the Adriatic, possibly on the Istrian peninsula, at that time part of Austria-Hungary.
