Condition

The actual paintings are warmer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both canvasses are unlined. Stretcher marks are slightly visible. In the male portrait a small repaired damage is visible in the upper left. Small retouched spots of paint loss are visible in the lower centre right, in the armour, and along the lower edge. Inspection under ultra violet light furthermore reveals a small damage in the background upper left and upper right, in the centre in the ribbon, and a very tiny one in the face. The paint surface in the female portrait has grown a bit dry. A few small spots of paint loss can be observed under her eye, right of her head, in the upper left corner, and in the centre. Retouched paint losses are visible in the crown, in her hand, in her chest and in the background upper left. Inspection under ultra violet light furthermore reveals additional retouchings in her dress, in her hand and chest. Both paint surfaces are covered with a dull and dry layer of varnish and there's some surface dirt. Offered in light grey carved wood frames with a gilt fillet, and gilt decorations in the corners, with some losses. (MW)
