Description
- a still life of roses, parrot tulips, carnations, fuchsias, foxgloves and other flowers in a sculpted vase, on a draped table, in an outdoor setting; a still life of parrot tulips, lilies, carnations, honeysuckle and other flowers in a sculpted vase, on a draped table, in an outdoor setting
- a pair, both oil on canvas
- each: approx. 122 by 81.5 cm.
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, in the 1970s (according to information provided by the present owner).
Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone and the contrasts are less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests.
Both canvases are relined. The second still life (as illustrated in the catalogue) has two canvas patches to the reverse lower right. The paint layer of both paintings are somewhat flattened.
Both paintings have filled and retouched damages that are visible to the naked eye, e.g. in the upper sky and in the foliage of the background. Some smaller spots of retouchings are visible throughout. The paint layers are under a transparent varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional ones in both paintings in the vases and in the blue cloth, and in the roses in the centre. Most of the flowers are well preserved. The varnish layer is unevenly cleaned.
Offered in a dark wood frame, a few chips along the edges, but overall in good condition.
