Description
- Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton
- A songbird on a branch in a wooded landscape, near a currant bush
- oil on canvas, unlined
- 37.8 by 34.3 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is less red and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined and waxed on the reverse. Stretcher marks are slightly visible. A small retouched tear is visible in the upper centre. Otherwise, no damages seem to be apparent and the brushwork is very nicely preserved. A few tiny retouched paint losses are visible in the foliage. The craquelure pattern is very fine and dense, and the paint surface is covered with a clear and shiny layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings, and furthermore, reveals a few tiny retouchings in the upper left corner and a thin retouched scratch in the centre.
Offered in a plain gold painted wood frame with a moulded fillet. (MW)
