Description
- Dirk Maas
- an extensive wooded landscape with King Louis XIV and his company returning from the hunt, a view of the palace of Versailles beyond
signed lower left: D Maas.
- oil on canvas
- 77.3 by 109.7 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is slightly darker and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a firm relining, which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. The paint surface is slightly abraded, mainly in the greenish tones. A spot op paint loss of approx. 1 square cm. is visible in the lower left, and a tiny one above the lower edge. A small repaired and retouched tear is visible in the lower left corner. Retouchings are visible along the lower edge, in the sky and in the foliage. The paint surface is covered with a very dirty and glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but there's probably some strengthening in the figures as well.
Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame with a few losses. (MW)
