Catalogue Note

The griffin-headed feet are of unusual form, that is they are a combination of a classical griffin, a fusion of an eagle, a lion and a fish and the Greek/Phoenician mythological hippocamp, a creature which has traditionally been depicted as a horse in its forepart and with a scrolling fishlike backpart.

A Mallorcan commode with similar griffin headed and fish tail feet and on concave-fronted platform base used to be situated in the Palacio de Truyols, Palma de Mallorca.

Above mentioned commode from the Palacio was offered in our London rooms, 8 July 2008, as lot 314 (one of near pair).
