Description
- Pierre-Joseph-Celestin François
- The Holy Family with the infant Saint John the Baptist
signed lower right: François
- oil on panel
- 48 by 37.6 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is lightly bevelled on all sides. A thin retouched horizontal crack of approx. 5 cm. is running from the right edge in the centre. There are a few surface scratches lower left. Some minor strengthening can be observed in the costume of the small boy and in Maria's headdress. The paint surface is covered with a dirty discoloured layer of varnish and there's some surface dirt. Inspection under ultra violet light is completely impeded by the dirty varnish layer.
Offered in a decorative wood gilded frame with plaster decorations, with a few losses. (MW)
