Literature

F. Schottmüller, Wohnungskultur und Möbel der Italienischen Renaissance, Stuttgart, 1921, p. 108 and 114 , fig. 255 and 265, illustrates an Italian walnut cupboard with similar fluted and reeded pilasters and stepped plinth base.

Condition

Overall with dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. Overall with traces of old woodworm and small wood losses. Partly later cornice, with part missing at the right side and with crack to front, overall with restorations to construction and to the mouldings, with later keyholes and locks replaced, trelliswork probably associated.

Catalogue Note

The wrought iron fronted section would suggest that this present cupboard was purpose built for a library. The wrought iron would have permitted the books to breathe in the cupboard and show the leather spines to the viewer.
